Thrifty Thursday: Casual Chic (Part 1)

Welcome to our very first Thrifty Thursday! These posts will focus on living your classiest life–at a discount. I’ll show you some great buys from consignment and thrift stores, ways to decorate your home with things you already have, and more!

Today’s post is about clothes shopping. I’m a BIG consignment store gal! Why? Because you can find some wonderfully classy pieces that are gently used at a major discount. Here’s what I got on my last trip to a new store in my area…

A vintage style denim vest…

Vintage chic denim vest

This was only $3.99!!!
(That’s a cup of coffee…)

This is fantabulous because it’s so versatile. You can pair it with dresses, shorts, other jeans, slacks, blouses … just about anything. Try it for yourself, find a quality jean vest or jacket and have fun with it!

A comfy casual chic tee

Neutral scroll floral comfy casual top

This was only $2.99!!! (Less than a cup of coffee…)

I couldn’t pass this one up ’cause I’m always looking for comfy tees. This one has just enough visual texture and design to be worn alone and hold it’s own. (Not too many accessories would be needed to jazz up an outfit.)

Check in tomorrow for Part 2 of “Casual Chic” posted over in Fun Friday!

Would You Let Your Daughter Dress Like This?!

I came across this article and had to write about it, because it’s a great example how your daughter can be classy in the summer weather.

But I must admit that this mother’s post got under my skin…

Why?

Because with so many un-classy style influences out there, where it seems like every time you turn on the television or flip through a magazine, there’s “sexy this” and “teen pregnancy that”, and “show off more of this here”… It’s amazing kids can even just be kids anymore!

Yes, this woman’s post irritated me. Because her daughter, who is 14 years old, was sent home for being dressed inappropriately!

This outfit works! Can't believe this was improper dress for school...

What?!

She was sent home because (somehow) the principal noticed that her skirt (which is actually pretty cute and a versatile neutral) was a half an inch too short! Now, take a moment to visualize, or actually grab a ruler to measure out a half inch. Does that really make a difference on a day when it’s 80+ degrees outside? I mean, do pre-teens/teens now have to plan their outfits to the inch, along with social pressures, academic requirements, and everything else that goes along with being a teen?

I say kudos to the young woman who wore this outfit – it’s age appropriate, classy, cute and fun. And to her mom, thank you for sharing how ridiculous some principals can be. I know dress codes are there for good reason – and the principal would not want students to take advantage of the rules… but there has got to be some wiggle room here.

So, readers, my questions to you are:

  • Would you let your daughter dress like this?
  • What are some of the issues you’re dealing with regarding teens style these days?
  • What’s the funniest thing your child has been sent home for?

I’d love to hear your comments below! If you have questions on how to tweak your daughter’s wardrobe to something more classy, contact me for a FREE Image Assessment to figure out her style preference, and to find a look that makes you both happy.

Boots For Any Outfit!

If you’ve ever gone boot shopping, you can probably relate to “happy-joy” feeling you get when you find “the perfect pair”.  Problem is, that perfect pair may not work with many outfits, or, may only be available in one color… Or, perhaps you can only get one perfect pair this year…

Well thank goodness for the creators of  Too Kyoot Boot Toppers! (Pronounced: Too Cute) They’ve created a faux-fur product that you can wear with any pair of boots – tall or short – and get an entirely new look each time! Fun, simple, versatile and classy!  My personal favorite is the black mink design, but I hear the pheasant and porcupine are pretty popular too…

Just click on the image below to find out where to go locally (in the Knoxville, TN area) to get your pair today!

Winter White at a Store Near You

A few weeks ago, I blogged about how you can wear white after Labor Day. During a quick trip through the mall yesterday, I saw this in one of my favorite storefronts… White House|Black Market!

Winter White Coat Fall 2011

Saw this in my local White House | Black Market storefront!

I love this store’s simple, classic style (who can go wrong with black and white?) And am excited to see how they’re incorporating white into the winter wardrobe. A great example of how you can wear all neutrals and still look stylish!

What do you think?

Hot Pink Stretch Pants?!

What Brought Me To The Classy Side…

When I was younger, I attended a private school. While I hated having to wear a monotone uniform every single day… I was relieved to not have to worry about picking out what to wear. And then it began… Casual Friday…

One Friday per month we could wear whatever we wanted. At first, I was elated because I could finally add some color! Everything was going great until one fateful day… I’d mixed up the dates and wore my hot pink stretch pants on the wrong day! I was mortified. I’d never felt so out of place. From then on, I pledged that I would rather be over-dressed than under-dressed.

Cute Kid in 80's Style of Dress

It's not me... but isn't she adorable?!

Not long after that I saw Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and like many others, I was hooked on her style and charisma. It was then that I realized that dressing well makes a difference. It makes a difference in how you feel about yourself, and it makes a difference in how you’re perceived by others.

This realization was confirmed even more as I watched additional “old movies” over the years and observed other successful women. Often times the successful, confident women dressed in a more polished “put-together” style.

How you dress represents who you are and where you want to be. And who I aspire to be is a classy, successful lady.

Why I Still Prefer The Classy Style…

Today, wearing the “classic look” is a part of who I am. Friends and family actually know it’s me before they see my face! Once, while at a Christmas event, a family member even said that she “…knew it was [me] coming down the stairs just by my black patent leather heels!”

Being able to to quickly piece together an outfit and receive compliments like “You look like you’ve just stepped out of a Vogue magazine” is pretty nice, too. And being able to attend just about any function, meeting, or event without worrying about looking “out of place” allows me to focus on the event and the people in front of me.

Most important of all, I’m dressing in a style that is comfortable for me; which allows me to be–well–myself. When you’re uncomfortable in your clothes – it shows – whether you know it or not. How often have you seen someone unconsciously fidgeting with their shirt or pants…?

It’s all about being yourself, while being presentable – and looking the best you can in what you like.

My Questions To You Are:

            • What style of dress do you prefer?
            • Why do you prefer this look?
            • How does this work in your everyday life?

Feel free to comment below! If you prefer, you can also email me directly with any questions you may have on finding a style that’s right for you.

Stay Classy!
