Classy Attire for New Year’s Eve

The following question was asked by my good friend George, from What’s Happening George.

Dear Living the Classy Life,

My mom is going to a dinner and dance for New Year’s Eve and she can’t decide what to wear.  She prefers classy and comfortable with a light jacket.  Do you have any ideas for her?  Pictures would be nice so I can show her.

Thanks, George!

Hello George!

Dinner and dancing… what a wonderful way to bring in the New Year!

There are many things to consider when choosing an outfit for a night-on-the-town–especially when that night is New Year’s Eve! I can understand how confusing and frustrating it can be.

I like that your mom is considering a comfortable piece with a jacket. Many forgo comfort for a particular style when shopping for a special outfit  - which only interrupts your enjoyment of the evening. (I know, I’ve often thought “What a fun night… but my dogs are barkin’!”) The jacket is a good addition because it will give her more flexibility as temperatures vary, and also provides a more polished look.

Now, everyone has their own level of comfort and definition of class. Most women, however, look great in neutral colors such as black, white, and taupe. She may even want to consider a metallic or shimmer fabric since it’s New Years Eve and a night out.

Below are a few things to consider, as well as a couple of pieces I’d choose for myself (depending on where the dinner and dancing is being held).

  • Where will she be (indoors vs outdoors, and what’s comfortable for her while dancing)?
  • Does she prefer pants or skirts/dresses
  • What are her age and personality? What’s appropriate while still fun?

This classic jacket dress is in a taupe, metallic fabric. It works well for many occasions and ages.

Don’t the ruffles on this top just scream “fun”? And the fabric allows for carefree movement on the dance floor.

Can You Wear White After Labor Day?

The passing of Labor Day brings one of my favorite times of year: Fall! I love the colorful trees, delicious pies, and cooler mornings. Fall also comes with a common style dilema: Is it OK for me to wear white after Labor Day?  Many women are perplexed by this… wondering “Do I HAVE to pack up my whites? Or, can I say ‘forget it’ and wear what I like?”

No one seems to be too clear on how this tradition began.  According to a Time Magazine Article:

One common explanation is practical. For centuries, wearing white in the summer was simply a way to stay cool — like changing your dinner menu or putting slipcovers on the furniture. “Not only was there no air-conditioning, but people did not go around in T shirts and halter tops. They wore what we would now consider fairly formal clothes,” says Judith Martin, better known as etiquette columnist Miss Manners. “And white is of a lighter weight.”

However, the same article also states that:

“… other historians speculate, the origin of the no-white-after–Labor Day rule may be symbolic. In the early 20th century, white was the uniform of choice for Americans well-to-do enough to decamp from their city digs to warmer climes for months at a time: light summer clothing provided a pleasing contrast to drabber urban life. “If you look at any photograph of any city in America in the 1930s, you’ll see people in dark clothes,” says Scheips, many scurrying to their jobs. By contrast, he adds, the white linen suits and Panama hats at snooty resorts were “a look of leisure.”

I personally believe it stems from the changing seasons. I mean, who wants to wear white in muddy weather? (I’ve been there – and done that – it was not pretty. Especially when you throw hyper dogs into the mix…)

So, not wearing white after Labor Day may have originated from functionality, or social status or even something else altogether. We simply don’t know. Whatever the origin, I for one will be wearing my white pieces throughout the year. Why? Because they work so well! And if the weather isn’t an issue – I’m going for it.

A Few Ways to Wear White After Labor Day

White is a wonderful neutral that works with everything. Worn alone in a monotone outfit – it’s chic and bold. When paired with color, whites offer a contrast that really pops. Below are a few ways to incorporate white into your wardrobe throughout the cooler months:

Wear a Winter White: If you’re not comfortable with a bright “summer” white, consider wearing a winter white instead. (Winter white is more of a creamy, off-white color.) You’ll still get the classic white effect without the summer feel.

Pair your white separates with the colors of the season. For example, in the fall, wear a white pant with an autumn orange belted cardigan and chestnut brown shoe.  In the winter – add some flair by pairing a white blazer with a cranberry blouse and a wool grey pinstripe pant.

White shoes would look absolutely divine against a black wide-legged pantsuit, or a midnight blue a-line skirt with a white top to match.

My Questions To You Are:

  • How do you think the “No White After Labor Day” tradition began?
  • Will you be wearing white this fall/winter season?
  • What is your favorite white accessory?

Hot Pink Stretch Pants?!

What Brought Me To The Classy Side…

When I was younger, I attended a private school. While I hated having to wear a monotone uniform every single day… I was relieved to not have to worry about picking out what to wear. And then it began… Casual Friday…

One Friday per month we could wear whatever we wanted. At first, I was elated because I could finally add some color! Everything was going great until one fateful day… I’d mixed up the dates and wore my hot pink stretch pants on the wrong day! I was mortified. I’d never felt so out of place. From then on, I pledged that I would rather be over-dressed than under-dressed.

Cute Kid in 80's Style of Dress

It's not me... but isn't she adorable?!

Not long after that I saw Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and like many others, I was hooked on her style and charisma. It was then that I realized that dressing well makes a difference. It makes a difference in how you feel about yourself, and it makes a difference in how you’re perceived by others.

This realization was confirmed even more as I watched additional “old movies” over the years and observed other successful women. Often times the successful, confident women dressed in a more polished “put-together” style.

How you dress represents who you are and where you want to be. And who I aspire to be is a classy, successful lady.

Why I Still Prefer The Classy Style…

Today, wearing the “classic look” is a part of who I am. Friends and family actually know it’s me before they see my face! Once, while at a Christmas event, a family member even said that she “…knew it was [me] coming down the stairs just by my black patent leather heels!”

Being able to to quickly piece together an outfit and receive compliments like “You look like you’ve just stepped out of a Vogue magazine” is pretty nice, too. And being able to attend just about any function, meeting, or event without worrying about looking “out of place” allows me to focus on the event and the people in front of me.

Most important of all, I’m dressing in a style that is comfortable for me; which allows me to be–well–myself. When you’re uncomfortable in your clothes – it shows – whether you know it or not. How often have you seen someone unconsciously fidgeting with their shirt or pants…?

It’s all about being yourself, while being presentable – and looking the best you can in what you like.

My Questions To You Are:

            • What style of dress do you prefer?
            • Why do you prefer this look?
            • How does this work in your everyday life?
