The following question was asked by my good friend George, from What’s Happening George.
Dear Living the Classy Life,
My mom is going to a dinner and dance for New Year’s Eve and she can’t decide what to wear. She prefers classy and comfortable with a light jacket. Do you have any ideas for her? Pictures would be nice so I can show her.
Thanks, George!
Hello George!
Dinner and dancing… what a wonderful way to bring in the New Year!
There are many things to consider when choosing an outfit for a night-on-the-town–especially when that night is New Year’s Eve! I can understand how confusing and frustrating it can be.
I like that your mom is considering a comfortable piece with a jacket. Many forgo comfort for a particular style when shopping for a special outfit - which only interrupts your enjoyment of the evening. (I know, I’ve often thought “What a fun night… but my dogs are barkin’!”) The jacket is a good addition because it will give her more flexibility as temperatures vary, and also provides a more polished look.
Now, everyone has their own level of comfort and definition of class. Most women, however, look great in neutral colors such as black, white, and taupe. She may even want to consider a metallic or shimmer fabric since it’s New Years Eve and a night out.
Below are a few things to consider, as well as a couple of pieces I’d choose for myself (depending on where the dinner and dancing is being held).
- Where will she be (indoors vs outdoors, and what’s comfortable for her while dancing)?
- Does she prefer pants or skirts/dresses
- What are her age and personality? What’s appropriate while still fun?

This classic jacket dress is in a taupe, metallic fabric. It works well for many occasions and ages.

Don’t the ruffles on this top just scream “fun”? And the fabric allows for carefree movement on the dance floor.
